This is a series of articles dedicated to earth based spiritual practices, aimed for people that are healers, or are working with high frequency energies to reconnect was the earth, nature, and thus grounding themselves to the cycles that mother earth goes through the year, hoping these practices can assist them in balancing out the sometimes taxing high vibrational work they’re engaged with, with the calm energies of nature observance.
In the Neopagan spiritual circles, Imbolc (pronounced ee-mo-lk) is celebrated on February the 2nd each year.

Imbolc is the point in the Wheel of the Year where we are deep in wintertime, (for the folks living in the northern hemisphere) and is that spark, that time, that reminder, that even in the depths of winter, hope is still there for the light to fully return when spring arrives.

One of the common themes surrounding this holiday is the idea of preparing for the light to come when spring arrives, by engaging in activities of cleaning the house and our inner world as well.
By engaging in cleaning your space with intention, you’re making space for the new energies to come. For me, doing a good deep cleaning leaves me afterwards with a feeling of lightness that makes room for inspiration, growth and novelty.

This practice does not involve something elaborate, just expects you to roll up your sleeves and throw away anything that does not serve you anymore, which symbolically represents your own process of letting go what no longer serves you.
Working with light to inspire clarity and protection
Imbolc is deeply connected with the idea of light. In the Neopagan tradition, people follow the tradition of lighting candles, which is inspired by the old practices in northern Europe of lightning fires to encourage the returning of the sun.
Lighting candles also symbolizes our own commitment to fan our inner spark, encouraging our spirit to shine through in the months to come.
Reconnecting with nature’s cycles and your inner wisdom
With each holiday based on the Neopagan Wheel of the Year, we are urged to reconnect with nature and her cycles.
Imbolc falls within the period of the year, where the first stirrings of spring can be observed. There are many plants that bloom at this time, like snowdrops and crocuses. Also, hearing birdsongs that imply nesting behavior. People living in colder climates may observe a difference in how the air feels, and that days grow longer.

5 Sacred Ways to Celebrate Imbolc With Simple Rituals
What follows are 5 simple ways to celebrate Imbolc, which were introduced above when I discussed the general themes surrounding Imbolc.
You don’t have to engage in elaborate practices to honor the day. What you need is setting your intention to do so through simple tasks that might be inspired by the ones that follow or from your own intuition and inner wisdom.
1. How to Celebrate Imbolc by Embracing the Return of Light Through Candle Magic
One of the important themes of this Neopagan holiday is the idea of the returning light. What was the spark that lit during the winter solstice is now becoming more apparent with the fact that the days have become longer and thus the strength of the sun has become greater.
During this day, it is customary to light candles, which represents the idea of encouraging light, and the sun to return to its glorious strength and thus bringing us out of the darkness of winter.

Another thing that you can do is engage with what is called candle magic, or in more new age spiritual terms manifestation using candles.
This can be as easy or elaborate as you wish. You can pick up any candles you want with a color that corresponds to the desire that you want to see manifest (like red for anything that has to do with passion and fortitude, green for prosperity etc.), and by holding your intent in your mind light the candles and let them burn all the way (always under your supervision) releasing your intent to the universe.
2. How to Celebrate Imbolc by Planting Seeds of Intention for the Year Ahead
During this day, it is also a common practice to plant seeds as a symbolic and tangible gesture of planting an idea into fertile soil.
For me, though, it is more of taking care of what has sprouted from the day I planted the seed around the Winter Solstice.
During this day, it is also a common practice to plant seeds as a symbolic and tangible gesture of planting an idea into fertile soil.
Imbolc is also the day where I can reflect on the intentions that I set during Yule, and tent the plant that has grown from sowing those seeds of what I wanted to take form.
3. How to Celebrate Imbolc by Practicing Cleansing and Decluttering for New Energy
As I discussed above this list of practices you can engage in during Imbolc, deep cleaning you’re home and decluttering your space serves the important task of making space for what you want to come into fruition, and beyond that make space for the new energies that spring will bring forth when it arrives.

4. How to Celebrate Imbolc by Honoring Folk Magic With Charms and Protection Rituals
During Imbolc (and any other holiday of the Wheel of the Year) folk magic can be practiced. This type of magic is based on practices that common people were engaged with in the olden days. Modern Neopagan tradition has assimilated some of these practices, like creating charms and amulets.
Charms are small items that you can carry around and intend to attract something that you want. Amulets are also items that you can carry around that are imbued with the intention is to keep unwanted energies away from you.
During Imbolc (and any other holiday of the Wheel of the Year) folk magic can be practiced.
You can make a charm or amulet by taking a crystal charging it with your intention, and putting it in a small bag you can carry with you.
Sometimes reconnecting with old practices is a way to honor your past, and by honoring your roots, you can bring their power into your own spiritual journey.
5. How to Celebrate Imbolc by Nourishing the Spirit With Seasonal Foods and Kitchen magic
Kitchen magic is another practice that a lot of Neopagans like to engage with, to manifest their desires. Kitchen magic is a form of magic (or manifesting) where you use food and the utensils of your kitchen as symbolic means to bring forth a desired outcome.
Enjoying the Neopagan holidays by trying this type of magic can become the focus of celebration and blessing for one’s family, or friends.
Kitchen magic is another practice that a lot of Neopagans like to engage with, to manifest their desires.
You don’t have to be an expert in kitchen magic to apply it, you only need to prepare food with intention and by pouring your love and blessing to it to become a vehicle of health and beauty for the people that will enjoy the holidays feast.
Conclusion
Imbolc is a reminder to all of us that even in the darkest and coldest periods of winter, there’s always the hope of light returning to its full strength. This idea applies also in our lives where, even though we might go through challenging phases, there’s always something to be learned and gained through this experience.
Honoring this day is a good way for us to remember this, and also commit ourselves to always see the light even in the darkest moments.
Till next time, take care.
