Sound has a very tangible effect on us on how it makes us feel physically, emotionally, mentally. Sound can make us emotional or feel invigorated. We can even share the experiences of another person, either their joy or their pain, through sound and music.

In this article, I’m not going to talk about the mundane uses of sound, but I will explore its unique ability to help us get in tune with harmony and balance.

Sound has a very tangible effect on us on how it makes us feel physically, emotionally, mentally

This is the way of sound meditation, a specific type of meditation where you focus on either a physical instrument or an electronic one with the intention of attuning to the set of frequencies it emits.

So, if you are ready, follow me on this extraordinary journey of exploring how sound can help us elevate our state of being.

The Resonant Flow of Sound and Healing Energy

How Sound Restores Natural Balance

Everything in nature vibrates at a specific frequency, be it physical or energetic. Sound, in a way, as I perceive it, is a bridge between the physical and the subtle.

What I mean is, even though sound travels through a physical medium (the air that surrounds us, water, or through objects that can resonate with this energy, like a metal) it also is the product of a subtle energy signature that came before its manifestation.

This might sound complicated, but in reality, but from a metaphysical point of view of how things manifest in the world, (at least from a western esoteric perspective), whatever is manifested in the material world, first originated as a thought form, a type of entity that is bound in the mental plane of reality, above the physical.

Of course, not all thought forms are positive, but here I am going to talk about those that manifest harmonious sounds that affect us positively. Thus, sounds that can bring harmony and balance originate from a higher spiritual level of reality closer to the order and beauty of Source.

Tools, Practices, and Emerging Science of Sound Meditation

Using instruments and even the human voice to create change to one’s psyche, and even physical bodies, is something that is ancient. Drums, clubbing sticks, singing bowls, etc. were not only used in ceremony but also in meditation, and even in healing processes.

These ancient practices survived the ages for us to reap the benefits that the ancients enjoyed. But of course, we had to adjust them in a way that could resonate with our modern way of life, so today’s use of sound as a meditation and healing tool can be backed by science.

5 Transformative Benefits of Sound Meditation in Daily Life

Here, we’re going to explore 5 benefits that you can have while engaging in sound meditation. These benefits can be observed in body, mind and spirit.

Sound meditation is not something mystical. On the contrary, it is more familiar than we think. Who hasn’t been touched by the power of sound and music at some point in their lives?

So on that note (pun not intended), let’s begin.

1. Restoring Cellular Harmony Through Vibration

From a metaphysical point of view, our bodies act like instruments, and each cell holds its own unique energetic frequency.

When we are out of tune, disease can take over, and using sound meditation, we can pull our physical being out of disharmony into harmony.

From a metaphysical point of view, our bodies act like instruments, and each cell holds its own unique energetic frequency.

In my experience I was astounded when I first used the solfeggio frequencies (a set of sound frequencies that were discovered in the 70s having extraordinary effects on our energy field when we are exposed to them), and how they helped me reduce pain. After listening to an audio file that produced the solfeggio frequency of 174 Hertz, my pain level dropped from 8 to a level 4, and it took only 20 minutes to do so.

2. Awakening the Body’s Inner Healing Potential

The idea that sound can affect our bodies at a cellular level, leads to the conclusion that our bodies have an inner healing potential that can be activated in various ways, one of which is sound.

This is not something difficult to grasp, since modern science and the medical community realize how stress, when prolonged, can cause many types of diseases in our bodies. Sound meditation is a wonderful way to help our bodies restore a sense of calm, deep relaxation and peace, which then promotes healing.

3. Entering Deeper States Through Rhythmic Entrainment

Our brains vibrate at a certain frequency depending on which state in which they are functioning.

When we are conscious and awake, our brainwaves oscillate around 14 Hertz, called beta waves, and while we are asleep and dreaming, our brainwaves oscillate around 8 to 10 Hertz and are called alpha waves. When we are in a deep state of sleep, our brainwaves, reach the rate of 4 Hertz hearts also called delta waves.

Our brains vibrate at a certain frequency depending on which state in which they are functioning.

In terms of sound meditation, there is a phenomenon called rhythmic entrainment which occurs when repetitive sounds vibrating at a certain frequency or range of frequencies causes our brains to synchronize with it either by listening to the beat of a drum, or to sacred chants or even the repetitive sound of a chime being rang.

4. Walking in the Footsteps of Ancient Sound Practices

Long before the contemporary use of sound in meditation, backed by scientific studies, ancient cultures had already discovered the power of sound.

Shamans used drums to reach altered states of consciousness and helped them travel to other realities, while sacred instruments helped bring balance not only to individuals but to a whole community.

Long before the contemporary use of sound in meditation, backed by scientific studies, ancient cultures had already discovered the power of sound.

When I discovered the idea of sound meditation, I started a journey of listening to different sounds produced by Tibetan bowls, gongs, chimes, etc. and found how deeply that impacted how I felt both emotionally, physically and energetically.

5. Expanding Consciousness Beyond the Everyday Mind

The effects of sound meditation are not confined to helping your body move to a relaxed state or speed up its healing abilities but can help you achieve a higher state of consciousness.

Wind chimes.

I have experienced these states either through listening to solfeggio frequencies (like the frequency of 932 Hertz) and also by listening to modern sound healers using gongs where the first time that I that I got exposed to their sounds I felt like portals were opening transporting me for just a split of a second two other dimensions.

Conclusion

Sound meditation is a doorway to bringing harmony back to your physical body and your psyche as well as to achieving expanded states of consciousness.

If you are exploring this kind of meditation, I would encourage you to start small either by listening to healing or sacred sounds, or even chanting sacred mantras, for 5 minutes each day and see how this affects you.

Overtime constant practice in small increments, you will accumulate in bringing you in harmony, and also in balance, connecting you with your body, and also the deepest part of yourself, your soul.

Till next time, take care.
